This year, 87% of all students succeeded in their academic year thanks to this program, and 91% of students who were passing the brevet, succeeded in their official exams.
BASSMA believes that children’s future is highly correlated to their level of education since, as George Washington Carver described it, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom” and we, at BASSMA, want to be the providers of that “key”.
Therefore, BASSMA strives for strengthening Education, in addition to its actions on issues like nutrition, access to medical services, house renovations, etc., knowing that Education is the building block of the association’s mission that is to empower families to reach self-sufficiency.
BASSMA is offering academic support to children struggling in school through the Tutoring Program, which aims at developing the skills and capacities of students (8 to 15 years old) who face learning difficulties at school, and helping them succeed in academic year.
In fact, BASSMA’s 9-years experience of a personalized relationship with deprived families showed many challenges faced by deprived children in their studies. Deprived children often live in rundown houses where they find it difficult to study, since their houses are:
1. Too small, composed of only one or two rooms where all family members live, speak and often shout.
2. Too cold, due to insufficient heating infrastructure
3. Not clean enough (and hygiene is an issue to be dealt with)
They need a secure and agreeable study environment, which provides a proper atmosphere for concentration and academic progress.
Furthermore, the beneficiaries of the program have special needs since they are malnourished, maltreated by their parents and present psychological symptoms.
They have also a very low educational level.
Plus, some of them tend to become delinquents if not followed-up by professionals.
Therefore, the Tutoring Program that we are suggesting is actually a School for Life for these destitute children who need a specialized follow-up, whereby professional teachers, psychologists and supervisors will look after the children to ensure a better future for them.
The Tutoring Program gives them the confidence to succeed and access to the following:
- Registration fees
- School books
- School supplies and adequate and full material
- Up to 217 special and intensive courses in all subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French and Arabic)
- Professional and experienced teachers recruited from Notre-Dame de Jamhour College
- Homogeneous and small groups
- Supervisors
- Personalized and psychological follow-up for each and every student
- Water, juice and nutritional snacks
- A safe, peaceful, clean, warm and healthy environment where they can truly concentrate and study properly
- A secure means of transportation, as BASSMA's bus picks up the children from their schools and drive them back home after the courses.
Through this program, we work hard to save children from delinquency and try to turn them into hard-working men and women that can financially help their current families on the mid-term, and build their own family on the long run, so they can raise their own children in dignity.
Every child deserves to shine at school!
Objectives
The objective of the “School for Life” Program is:
- To Bridge the students’ accrued learning gaps
- 75% of participating students succeed their school year 2011-2012, based on strong foundations, especially the students who have the official exams (Brevet).
On the short-term, this program will contribute to the well-being and education of 50 underprivileged children.
On the long run, it will impact students’ lives and thus transform the lives of 50 families in less than one year only, because, as Nelson Mandela used to say “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
BASSMA is working hard to save these children from delinquency and is trying to turn them into hard-working men and women that can financially help their current families on the mid-term, and build their own family on the long run, so they can raise their own children in dignity.
Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries count so much for BASSMA that we are offering them a Premium Service because what we care about the most is to achieve the best result possible and make a great impact in the lives of these children, since our mission is to transform Families’ lives!
Teachers
Skilled teachers from private schools who:
1- Accept to be committed for 9 months, attending the class everyday for 2 hours, and teaching a whole class of students with special needs and very low educational level at a very special price.
2- Are experienced enough to know how to evaluate the students’ level and give them the appropriate lessons with a pedagogical approach.
3- Give tutoring classes to all levels from 4th to 9th grade
Courses and Schedule
- The provided courses are the following: Languages (Arabic and French) and Science subjects (Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry).
- Courses are given Mondays to Fridays, 2 hours per day, in the late afternoon, with a special emphasis on preparing Brevet students for their official exams.
- A special emphasis is on students preparing Brevet students for their official exams.
- There will be a follow-up of students' results at school (grades, etc.) and an evaluation of their progress (Before and After the Tutoring Program).
The “School for Life” is then a very fundamental and powerful instrument which can enable the students to break the vicious cycle of poverty.
BASSMA has already implemented the Tutoring Program during the months of April, May and June 2011 and is looking forward to implement it during the coming school year 2011-2012.
